Addition is one of the essential four basic arithmetic operations. The other three operations are subtraction, division, and multiplication. The addition is the process of adding either two or more numbers and it’s denoted by a plus sign symbol (+). When you add two whole numbers together, the answer is the sum of the values combined.

Addition is one of the simple numerical tasks to perform. Adding small numbers can be done by infants and other animal species. For instance, the easiest basic task is, 1+1=2.  Besides that, we often use the basic primary arithmetic in our daily lives. For example, when working with money, calculating monthly bills, and calculating time.

Addition formula

The addition formula is: addend + addend=sum

●        Addend: these are numbers added to perform the additional operation.

●        Sum: this is the final result after the addition operation.

●        Symbols:  the two symbols for performing addition are a plus sign (+) and equal sign (=).

50 +50 = 100

20+20 = 40

40 + 70 = 110

90 + 100 = 190

500 + 200= 700

Addition without regrouping

Addition without regrouping means, the sum of the given digits is less than or equal to 9.

Addition with regrouping

Addition with regrouping means the sum of the numbers in the columns is greater than 9.

Addition properties

Commutative property: this means that you can change the order numbers but still get the same results. That is; a + b = b + a.

Associative property: this means that when you add three or more numbers together, the order of additional operation will not change the result. That is; (a + b) + c = a + (b + c).

Additive identity property:  when you add zero to any number, the number doesn’t change. Therefore, zero is an identity element for addition. That is; a + 0 = 0 + a = a.

Tips and tricks for learning addition

●        The symbol for addition is (+)

●        When you add zero to any number, you get the number itself.

●        The answer remains the same irrespective of the order.

●        When you add 1 to any number, the sum is the successor of the given number.

●        Adding numbers can also mean, ‘in all’, ‘total’, ‘altogether’, or ‘put together

●        To make task easier, break the numbers according to their place value. For instance, 33+74, you can split to, 30+3+70+4.

●        Begin with the greater number, and add the smaller one, like, 22+74 than 74+22.

●        Ensure you place numbers in the correct column depending on their place value.
